Exhibition: Portraits & Voices of WWII. Lest We Forget

26/05/2017 02:00 PM - 11/06/2017 04:00 PM

Coinciding with this years 1940s weekend which is taking place from 26th May across the bank holiday weekend The Whitaker are delighted to launch their next exhibition showing a collection of works by local photographer Allen Thomasson who runs timeless portraits.

Allen first came to the attention of the Whitaker arts team last year when he was appealing for Rossendale veterans from the second world war to come forward to take part in his new project, one that saw local service men and women photographed in their own homes in an attempt to capture a part of our social history that we must not lose; a value we continually strive to uphold in all that we do at the Whitaker.

The exhibition “Portraits & Voices of WWII. Less We Forget” comes from Allen's desire to preserve the memories and images of those who risked all for the freedoms we enjoy today and to evoke feelings and memories, on you the viewer, as you look into a face that would otherwise be lost to history.

"I like to sit and chat a while with the veterans before I take their portrait and if they are willing I also record their thoughts and memories on video” says Allen on his meetings with our local heroes.

"To be able to meet and spend time with the veterans has been a most humbling experience and a privilege. I have met the most incredible people who have become my adopted grandparents”

This intimate and inspiring exhibition will be opened by the Mayor & Mayoress of Rossendale at 2pm on Friday 26th May, when there will be opportunity for all to listen to the veterans stories and meet the artist. The exhibition runs until Sunday 11th June and certainly is not to be missed.
