Volunteer

The Whitaker has a growing friendly team of volunteers who are the heartbeat of all we do. The volunteers share our passion to provide a unique, quirky, space rich in heritage and culture. The contribution and dedication of our volunteers enables us to provide a sustainable museum that is freely available to everyone.

We do things a little differently to other museums and so we welcome people from all walks of life, this helps us to create a truly diverse team. We offer a wide range of roles at the museum bringing together a wealth of knowledge, skills and experiences. If you have memories you’d like to share or be involved in create memories for future generations and inspire change, this could be the start of your volunteering journey at The Whitaker.

Why become a Volunteer?

Why you should volunteer for The Whitaker:

  • Better physical and mental health and wellbeing.
  • Improve confidence.
  • New skills and valuable work experience.
  • A sense of connection to others in the community.

With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer – however, the benefits of volunteering can be enormous.  `
Volunteering offers help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer.
The right volunteer role can help you to make friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and even advance – or get your first steps in – your career.
Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, help combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose.
While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day.
Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.

Behind the scenes

We are a museum that’s run for the people, by the people.

Our amazing team of volunteers help in all kinds of ways. Whether it’s running big events, maintaining our outdoor spaces, supporting activities or welcoming guests with a smile, we have lots of opportunities available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, all our volunteers will have an induction process and receive all the information or training appropriate to the role undertaken. You will also have lots of opportunities to access further training.

The short answer is no. We have many different roles and opportunities available; some are broken down into half day shifts so you can choose to volunteer for just one or as many as you like. We also have roles that are for specific events or activities.

No all our volunteering roles are unpaid roles, however you can claim your travel expenses, refreshments are provided and you will receive a discount in our restaurant should you wish to purchase your lunch.

Yes, we require two references. For some of our volunteers we also require DBS checks. Where DBS is required, this is confirmed as part of your induction.

Anyone aged 14+ can volunteer with us.

Once again absolutely not. Whether you’re creative, a historian, an enthusiast or have never stepped foot in a museum or art gallery before you‘ll be in great company and we would encourage you to come along and join us.
