We are delighted to announce that Martha Lyons Haywood has been selected as the recipient of our New Graduate Award for 2022.

Martha is returning to the area after graduating from a 2-year Masters course in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The New Graduate Award will provide a solo artist exhibition, which will open on 22nd December in Gallery 1 at The Whitaker. The artists also received an artists fee and access to professional development support from our Creative Director Gaynor Seville.

The exhibition will run from Thursday 22nd December to Sunday 19th February 2023. Come and join us at the opening event on Thursday 22 December at 7pm – no need to book, just come along.

Martha is interested in investigating the contrast of the bright gallery spaces with the hidden spaces and history of the building, taking a journey through The Whitaker’s locality and the building itself.

Martha said: “I am excited to see how my practice might develop visually and poetically back in my home after this time away. I see The Whitaker as an institution that celebrates gentle responsibilities towards its community of artists and visitors, and the locality it belongs to.”

Our Creative Director Gaynor Seville said: “We are delighted to offer Martha this award. Her application showed real commitment and dedication to her practice, a genuine interest in The Whitaker and the locality, and an awareness of how this opportunity would help her develop as an artist.

We are all looking forward to seeing what she does in our beautiful gallery!”
