Red Squirrels are less common than they used to be.
They have been replaced in many areas by Grey Squirrels, which were introduced from the USA in the 19th century.
Grey Squirrels have out-competed the smaller Reds, and they also carry a disease, Squirrel Pox, that Red Squirrels are not immune to. Keeping Grey Squirrels out of the remaining areas with Red Squirrels helps protect the remaining populations for the future.
