Martin Grimes: Fault Lines

In this body of work, including drawing and watercolour landscapes,  everything began with the artist walking, whether through the city of Manchester, or the less obviously managed rural landscape of Calderdale.

Grimes’ practice continues to range beyond drawing and painting and encompasses photography and filmmaking. He is a founding member of the Dotca artist collective, and has created moving image commissions for British electronic ambient artists Marconi Union

Since moving to Todmorden in 2019 Grimes has been responding to the landscape of the Calder Valley, drawn to this landscape, a place where recent and deep history vie with each other in an ongoing play of utility versus the ‘natural’ or picturesque. Arguably a key location in the growth of the Industrial Revolution, railway line, roads and canal bisect an ancient, glacial geology, forming new fault lines and enabling new modes of living in this space, which is neither fully wild, nor completely tamed.

It is to this landscape – scarred by these interventions – Grimes is repeatedly drawn.
