Pat Flynn & Andrew McDonald – The Eve of the Deluge

Artworks by Pat Flynn and Andrew McDonald that respond to contemporary socio-political themes and dilemmas. Their work uses cinematic tropes and clichés exploring our response to the globalised polemics we are all greeted with.

The exhibition takes its title from the painting by John Martin (1789-1854), ‘The Eve of the Deluge’, 1840. A work depicting the story of Noah and in turn the prelude to the great flood.

Pat Flynn’s work employs CGI Photography and Animation, Andrew McDonald’s, drawing and hand-drawn animation. Works included in the exhibition span 20 years of practice.

Pat Flynn is an artist based in Greater Manchester. His realistic, digitally-rendered work focuses on “how we understand ourselves in light of mass media and commodity: the seduction, security, rituals and belief systems that transpire from mass production and consumer culture”. His work draws on ideologies, processes, themes and sentiments found in Hollywood films, computer games, consumer goods and advertising.

Andrew McDonald is Manchester based, teaches at the University of Central Lancashire. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including with MIMA, Castlefield Gallery, Chapter, The Grundy Gallery, and was featured in British Art Show 6. Andrew McDonald’s making process is intense, extended periods of drawing and production demanding months of the artist’s time, Be this animation or large-scale ink drawing. Imagery of caves, lightning bolts or pieces of rope are drawn with a line of nervous energy. McDonald is preoccupied with romantic notions of the tortured artist and its place in modernism something he finds equally heroic and absurd.
