Distant Voices, Still Lives

Distant Voices, Still Lives

We mark the recent passing of British screenwriter and director Terence Davies with his 1988 classic of Post-war working-class Liverpool life; by turns lyrical, humorous and horrific. This is a period film of two distinct halves shot two years apart on tight budgets, but with the same cast and crew. The first, 'Distant Voices', chronicles the early life of this working-class Catholic family. The second, 'Still Lives', sees the children grown up and emerging into a brighter 1950s Britain. These companion pieces evoke Davies’ upbringing in Liverpool after the war in a working-class home dominated by the violence of his father, fearsomely played by then newcomer Pete Postlethwaite. ‘Drawing on his upbringing and paced to the rhythms of 1940s popular songs, Davies’ first feature length drama is a family story flush with passion,’ BFI.
