Sincerely You Exhibition: National Care Leavers Week

Sincerely You Exhibition National Care Leavers Week

In collaboration with Lancashire County Council Leaving Care Service we are delighted to host for 1 week, the 'Sincerely, You' exhibition.

This free exhibition will feature around 50 letters written by children and young people who are either currently looked after by the county council or have been. They wrote the letters to their younger selves to capture their thoughts and feelings at that time. National Care Leavers' Week highlights the needs of care leavers, and encourages all organisations responsible for looking after them to work effectively together.

During National Care Leavers’ Week 2017 TOGETHER, we focus on the many ways in which working together promotes and improves the present quality of life of those leaving care as well as leading to better long term outcomes. Within Central and Local Government the Care Leavers Strategy aims to ensure that all of the many Departments who’s policies affects care leavers are working together with a true understanding of the needs of this uniquely vulnerable group and an understanding of the impact that major policy decisions have on their lives, such as decisions about Housing, Access to Education, Mental Health Services, and Welfare Supports. At Local Government level Councils are being urged to explore more fully their responsibilities as Corporate Parents, and how they can draw on all areas of local service delivery, including the development of robust community and voluntary partnerships. Care Leavers themselves are the originators and driving force behind many improvement initiatives
— Care Leavers Foundation, 2017
The letters are all different, and give a very personal view of experiences of being looked after, as well as an insight in to their adult life.

The national campaign aims to raise awareness of care leavers and I hope that as many people as possible take this opportunity and visit the exhibition.

We intend to make really good use of the individual experiences shared in the letters, and use them in future as part of the training of people working with children including foster carers and social workers.
— Susie Charles, Lancashire County Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Schools
