Intaglio Printmaking Taster Workshop with Alan Birch

Workshop leader: Alan Birch from Prospect Printmakers
Tickets: £10 per person, including all materials

A three-hour Whitaker workshop introducing participants to the process of intaglio printmaking. Please note that places are very limited for this workshop, so do book early to avoid disappointment.

Put simply, intaglio printing is a process whereby ink is pushed into the lines of an engraved block. This could be an engraved surface of a card plate, a perspex plate or a metal plate etched with acid. Ink is transferred to the paper using pressure applied by a press.

Workshop participants will be introduced to Alan’s work, and will then produce their own drawings from objects in the Whitaker and its grounds. These drawings will then be transferred to card plates using engraving tools, prints will be taken at various stages and collage will be added.  If time permits, the session will conclude with a short introduction to relief printing using wallpapers.

This work is likely to be a little messy and, weather permitting, some sketching may take place outside; the use of appropriate clothing is therefore strongly recommended. All materials will be provided on the day.

For more information on this workshop, please email Alan at Prospect Printmakers will be displaying an exhibition of work around the theme of 'The Pennines' on the first floor landing of The Whitaker from 21 April - 17 June.
