Ride Active: Cycling Challenge for Beginners


Ride active is free, fun and promotes healthy living. It starts Friday the 24th of May 2019 for 9 weeks (8 weeks of training and the 9th week (19thJuly) will be the POP (pedal our parks). It is a cycling challenge for those who are beginner riders or people who have never rode a bike to make themselves more comfortable as well as getting fitter. Done right you will become better and more confident on a bike. All equipment will be provided free of charge.

Similar to Couch to 5k, this scheme takes the rider from beginner to fitter, more confident rider in 9 weeks.

8 x 90 minute fun sessions are suggested to motivate the rider to continue, with a 2 hour celebratory Group Ride and café stop at the end in week nine. 

Ride Active East Lancashire is perfect for riders who can ride a bike, but require practise and confidence building or who are returning to cycling. Sessions start in a carefully chosen traffic free environment and progressing to incorporate short traffic free bike rides and a longer on road ride. These sessions, hope to gel the group together socially, learning in a fun, positive and informal environment.

The Programme

Week One - Dr Bike, Basic Bike Handling Skills Check (braking / setting off / riding for roughly 1 minute unaided)

Week Two – Controlling the Bike, Progressing cornering and steering, Activities to include bike sumo, slalom, ever decreasing circles

Week Three – Using gears, Teaching effective use of gears to allow for local gradients, This must include selecting appropriate gear for setting off and riding in traffic

Week Four – Riding one handed and observation, In preparation for on road riding, Simon says activities to encourage riders to look behind when riding and also to indicate effectively

Week Five – Group Riding. Riding in Pairs in preparation for going on a bike ride, Obstacle Course in pairs and progressed by riding in pairs with one hand.

Week Six – Easy 5 – 8 Mile Bike Ride from start point.

Week Seven – Easy 5 - 8 Mile Bike Ride from start point. Different route from week 7

Week Eight – Easy 5 - 8 Mile Bike Ride on quiet roads and traffic free from start point

Week Nine –Steady 10 mile Bike Ride on roads and traffic free to café stop, Celebration cake, coffee and awards

Free Bikes

Bikes and helmets will be provided Free of charge for the duration of the sessions, however should riders wish to bring their own, Day one of the program would include a Free Dr Bike session, which will allow for bikes to be fixed. Go Velo will work closely with the local bicycle recycle schemes in Rossendale to offer a cheap and eco friendly solution to bike purchasing.

Every Friday at 3pm for 9 weeks starting on the 24th May 2019 and finishing with a Group Ride on 19th July


  • Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This course is free to those aged 16 and over

  • What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is available in the park and the venue is on a bus route

  • What can I bring into the event?

Bring your own Bike and Helmet if you wish (although theses are supplied) and bring something to drink and waterproof clothing in case its drizzly.
